Like the end of every year, this year too, everyone will be talking about their vision boards for 2026. Magazine cutouts, abundance affirmations, and more. I’m not here to rain on that parade. But before you can see your dreams clearly, you need to actually see clearly.
Yes, I’m talking about your eyes. And your kids’ eyes. And the mental clarity that makes those goals of a balanced healthy lifestyle achievable.
The Part Nobody Puts on Vision Boards
Quick question: when was your last eye exam? If you had to pause and count backwards, that’s a problem.
We also take our vision for granted. That slight blur when you’re reading bedtime stories? The headaches after screen time? Your child squinting at the TV? These aren’t just inconveniences. They’re your body waving red flags.
In my practice, I regularly see parents who only schedule appointments after a teacher notices something. I get it. Life is busy. But here’s what untreated vision problems actually cost:
- Kids struggling in school not because they can’t learn, but because they literally can’t see the board
- Adults pushing through headaches and eye strain, calling it “just stress”
- Missed early signs of conditions that are far easier to treat when caught early
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends children get eye exams at 6 months, 3 years, before first grade, and then every two years. Adults? Every two years if you’re under 60, annually if you’re older or have risk factors.
So, first item on your 2026 vision board: actual vision care. Book those appointments.
The Vision You Can’t Fix With Glasses
Now let’s talk about the other kind of blur. The mental fog that makes you feel like you’re moving through life on autopilot. You know that feeling when you’re in the middle of something but can’t remember why you started? Or when you’re having a conversation, but your mind is already three tasks ahead? That’s cloudy mental vision.
Over the years, I’ve learned that clarity isn’t about seeing everything. It’s about knowing what deserves your focus.
Three Reality Checks for Your Mental Clarity in 2026
1: The Default Yes Problem
How many things on your schedule are there because you said yes without thinking? The volunteer commitment. The social event you don’t want to attend. The project that isn’t yours but somehow became yours.
Every automatic yes is a potential no to something that matters more.
2: The Fog Sources
What consistently makes you feel cloudy? Too much news? Certain relationships? Social media rabbit holes? Too many choices about things that don’t matter?
You can’t avoid all fog, but you can stop walking into it deliberately.
3: The Living vs. Performing Split
Where are you performing a version of yourself instead of just being yourself? At work? On social media? At family gatherings?
Performance is exhausting. It’s also the opposite of clarity.
Bringing Both Together
My challenge for you as 2026 approaches:
Literal vision check: Book that eye exam. For you and your kids. Not next month. This month. Use your phone’s calendar. Set reminders. Make it happen.
Figurative vision check: Take 10-15 minutes with a pen and paper. Not your phone, not your laptop. Write down three things you want to see more clearly in your life next year. Not what you think you should want. What you actually want.
Maybe it’s better boundaries at work. Maybe it’s being present. Maybe it’s finally admitting you need help and asking for it.
The Real Vision Board
Your 2026 vision board can have all the dream houses and travel destinations you want. But underneath those pretty pictures should be two fundamental things: clear eyes and a clear mind.
Everything else you’re hoping to see in your life depends on these basics.
Get your eyes checked. Identify your fog. Clear both.
The rest is just details.
